Our Big Surprise

Image
Today, we talked about some winter celebrations, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Three Kings Day, New Years Day, Chinese New Year. If you have any other celebrations you celebrate in the winter season, we would love to have your child share  their celebration and traditions with the class!  Mrs. Taylor and I celebrate Christmas and we wanted to get the class a gift. With how much students enjoyed taking care of the gerbils in years past, we thought this would be a great gift in helping teach responsibility and compassion. Today, the students got their "surprise". Crowfoot Petland came in with a variety of pets, a bunny, guinea pig, hedgehog,  budgie, lizard, turtle.... and lastly our new class pets, two adorable gerbils!  We learned TONS about all the animals and asked lots of good questions on how to take care of our new pets. It was a very exciting afternoon!   Our Class Pets:

Our trip to the library today was full of information. We learned that they have programs for everyone! Computer classes for seniors, reading programs for kids, coding for 2 year olds! But the coolest part of our trip was seeing how the book return machine sorts books.

Fresh Air Friday

We went on a nice walk around the schoolyard and checked out the community garden in the winter. We made some chalk art with our buddies. Students planned materials to bring in next week to help build their own neighbourhood in 3D. Each student will be making one place in the model community using everyday materials like cardboard, tissue boxes, egg cartons etc. Talk to your child to see what they are building and what materials they want to bring in.

Map Art

Students made Piet Mondrian inspired art. Students made a simple map of their bedroom, the library or the classroom. They changed their map into amazing art! Today we will name our art.

Skip Counting with Money

Image
Today, we pretended to go to a toy store  a bought many different toys! This was to help us with skip counting by  2's, 5's and 10's. We went to purchase toys with nickels, dimes, toonies, 5 and 10 dollar bills. Students were given a price and they had  to skip count with the money until they reached that number. They drew the number of coins and showed their skip counting. This could be a fun way for you to practice skip counting at home. If you have some change, have your child count by 5's with the nickels or by 10's with the dimes, and so on.

Research notes

Image
We learned to make jot notes Wednesday afternoon. We chose an animal of interest and read about how they prepare for winter. We, then, read some non-fiction writing in a small group and wrote the important parts about how the animal adapts, hibernates or migrates in winter.  .     .

Greater or Less Than

Image
Wednesday, we learned about the symbols for  "greater than" and "less than. We played with a partner and used our ten frames war to  fill in greater than and less than worksheet.  .
