Preparing for Winter

Image
Today, we looked at how animals will begin to prepare for winter during the fall. We learned there are 3 important ways that animals prepare for the harshness of winter, migrate, hibernate, or adapt. Geese migrate and fly south for the winter. Bears gorge on food on food in fall then hibernate for winter. Squirrels adapt to the winter by burying food in fall that they will dig up in winter when food supply is low. Ask you child about other animals they learned about today!

The First Great Lesson

Image
Wednesday, we did the Montessori  First Great Lesson. Students were awed as we explored how the solar system and Earth came to be. Most exciting was our volcano demonstration! In connection to the First Great Lesson  and our upcoming exploration of liquids in Science, we discussed the 3 states of matter, solid, liquid and gas. We charted some examples from nature for all 3.

Making numbers with tallies

Image
Wednesday, our wonderful grade 2's were  leaders as we taught grade 1's how to make a number using tallies. We used popsicle sticks as hands on tallies. We used skip counting by fives and counting up as strategies to  check our work. As grade 2's were showing and explaining, they were deepening their own understanding and better able to express their learning. We will use tally marks to count larger numbers, such as the number of yellow tickets we receive.

Thank you to officer Rich for coming to visit room 2 and 3! Thank you to Ms. Halsall for organizing his visit! Thank you to the students for giving their 5Ls of active listening! We learned so much about being a police officer! There is a police helicopter that can watch from the sky, even you. Police officers need to be safe too. They have 'just in case' safety tools. We learned it is important to know our address and phone numbers to keep ourselves safe. Before his visit, we prepared many questions. Officer Rich was amazed by the great questions from the students.

Robotics!

Image
Wednesday, we did story telling with our  robot, Dash in the app Wonder. Dash travelled to the zoo, saw some animals, alerted the zoo of an escaped bear and then went home. They learned to make sounds with their Dash and to even record their own voices!

On Tuesday, we worked on our skip counting by 2's to 20 and 5's and 10's to 100. For grade 2's, they also worked on skip counting by these numbers both forwards and backwards. We used a variety of materials from the class such as keys, links, blocks and beads. We also used Montessori materials such as the 100's board and skip counting chains. At home, you can challenge your child to skip count by using materials around the house such as lego blocks, etc. We also looked at the patterns we say as we hilighted the numbers on our 100's charts. Even though, we do not need to skip count to by 2's all the  way to 100 (only 20) we could tell by the pattern we saw, the numbers that would follow. Next week, we will try skip counting our yellow tickets to see how close we are to 100!

We are Bucketfillers

Image
We read “Have you Filled a Bucket Today”. It is a very special book that describes how we all have An invisible bucket we carry around.  When we are feeling good about ourselves, our bucket if filled. But when we are feeling down, our bucket is empty. You can fill others buckets by doing kind things such as a smile, compliment, hug and many more. This will also fill our bucket and leave us feeling good. Today, we wanted to make sure everyone’s bucket was full! We started our day talking about the ripple effect and how someone fills your bucket, you will often go on to fill someone else’s bucket. Ms. McCullough complimented 2 students and those students gave compliments or did something kind for someone else and passed on the hearts.  And so on until everyone ha...

Home Challenge

Image
Transparent, Translucent, Opaque Today we learned about transparent, translucent and opaque. Transparent – all light passes through Translucent – some light passes through Opaque – no light passes through For a challenge at home, look around your home for liquids and gels that are transparent, translucent and opaque.   Next week, we will have more conversation about this and it would be great for students to have a couple examples they found at home.
