A Moment In Time During Montessori Work Period

Image

Thursday April 4th is Wear Purple or Blue Day at CJP.

Thursday April 4th is  Wear Purple  or  Blue Day  at CJP.  Like Orange Shirt Day in September and Pink Shirt Day in February that is held to bring awareness to First Nation  reconciliation  and Anti-bullying, Wear Purple or Blue Day is to bring awareness to Epilepsy (purple) and Autism (blue). Families are encouraged to have a conversation with their child about  epilepsy  and/or autism, as both  impact  not only members of our Captain John Palliser community but people around the world.  Traditionally Purple and Blue days occur separately but this year will be  honoured  jointly as Purple Day occurs while students are on Spring Break.    Please consider joining us in raising awareness by wearing purple or blue (or both  colours ) clothes on Thursday April 4th.    Here are some websites that you may be interested in visiting:    http://www.purpleday.org/index.html ...

Mush!!

I may be the only person in Calgary who is hoping it's not too warm this weekend. We need snow on Monday to test our dog sleds!!  There was a lot of great teamwork that happened today. Ask your child about who helped them and who they helped!

Using our new editing glasses sure help us edit our work!!

New Science Vocabulary

Image
We have been doing lots of science experiments comparing the characteristics of liquids and learning lots of new vocabulary. Ask your child about  these experiments and our new words: Characteristics Dissolve, Miscible, Immiscible Density

World Water Day

On March 22, it is World Water Day.   We have talked about the importance of water in our world and come up with some ways to conserve water.   Here are some of our ideas.   See if your family can use some of our ideas to conserve water or come up with more ideas to share with the class! Turn water off when you are not using it Take a shower instead of a bath Not to much water in your bath Don’t wash clean clothes Re-use your towels Don’t bath everyday if not needed Add ice to water to cool it down instead of letting the tap run Put water in the fridge to keep cold Share a bath or shower Not playing with the hose Watch for leaks

Comparing Liquids

Image
Today, we looked at  4 liquids (honey, dish soap, corn syrup, olive oil ) and compared them  to water. We investigated each liquid and made guesses of what  they could be based on their  colour,  smell, touch, how they poured and if they were transparent, translucent or opaque. We ended our day with an exciting liquids raced! Ask your child which liquid won the race and which were the slowest! Tomorrow, we will learn our new vocabulary word "viscosity".

Sketching our Winter Tree

Image
As winter is coming to an end, we got outside to sketch our tree in winter. We made comparisons to how our winter tree looked in winter as compared to our previous sketching in fall/autumn.

Inuit Drums and Polar Bears

Image
We got started on making an Inuit (kinda) style drum. On Thursday we will decorate! A few students read about how polar bears stay warm. They read their book to the whole class. We all learned something new about polar bears today. Ask your child about what they learned.

A Day at the Glenbow

Image
A Day at the Glenbow: What a day! We learned so much and were busy all day. It was wonderful. Now students have some great connections to real artifacts when we talk about Inuit in the classroom. This trip couldn't have happened without our amazing volunteers!

Science Experimenting

Image
Thank you so much to parents and students who helped bring in materials for  our Science experiment on Wednesday! We were evaluating the suitability of different materials for  containing water. Each group was given a styrofoam cup with a hole. Each group came up with materials they wanted to test to try to contain the water. They followed the Scientific Method to test by beginning  with a hypothesis, performing a fair test, observations and conclusion. Well done Scientists of Room 3!

Polar Bear Walk

Image
Every year, polar bears in Hudson Bay walk up to 5,000 kilometers across Arctic sea ice in search for food to raise their cubs. But the sea ice on which they depend is changing, and in some cases disappearing altogether. (WWF - 2019) Fundraising to Adopt a Polar Bear Students are concerned for the animals of the Arctic. They can reduce greenhouse gasses by walking more. You can support your child in their efforts to be positive citizens of the environment by helping them raise money to donate to  ‘Adopt a Polar Bear’ through the WWF. Suggested Ways to Donate Money Donate a small amount of money (For example, .25 cents) each time your child offers to drive less. Tally the total amount and send in your donation to your child’s teacher by Thursday, March 21. Encourage them to: walk/bike instead of drive park a block or two from your destination and walk the rest of the way For more information please visit: http://polarbearwalk.wwf.ca
