Orange Shirt Day

ORANGE  SHIRT DAY -  “Every Child Matters”         Join us on Tuesday October 2 nd  in recognizing Orange Shirt Day by wearing an orange shirt! Orange shirt day was started by Phyllis  Webstad  and based on her experiences and memories of residential school in Williams Lake, BC when her new  orange  shirt was taken away on her first day of school at the mission.      The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.     Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in ...

Fantastic Fall Day

Image
Today was a fantastic fall day!   We read the story, "Why Do Leaves Change Colour" by Betsy Maestro.  We learned that as there is less sunlight, the chlorophyll breaks down and the green colour of leaves disappears and the leaf's other colours begin to show such as red, yellow, or orange.  The tree begins to prepare for winter and the leaves change color then fall to the ground.  As the leaves rot, they become nutrients in the soil for the tree. In the afternoon, we went outside to sketch a tree during the fall season.  We will sketch this same tree through all 4 of the season to see the changes it goes through. We also used the iPads to take photos of the signs of fall. We were even lucky enough to see a rabbit!  This got us talking about the changes animals go through during the seasons such as changing colours.  We will discuss this more soon! Here are some photos of us sketching and the favorite photos students took today of the sig...

Toonies for Terry

Image
Room 2 and 3 got into the positive spirit of the Terry Fox run by making inspiring drawings and messages with sidewalk chalk. It looks great! We will continue to collect toonies for Terry. Or bring in $10 and a funny item of clothing for Mrs. Taylor to wear on Thursday.

Room Parent Volunteer

Are you interested in volunteering for your child's class?  We are looking for a Room Parent.  A Room Parent can volunteer from home! Your main responsibility is to organize parent volunteers to come into the classroom. The teachers will communicate with you what we need help with. You will then organize volunteers to help. If you are interested in this role send Mrs. Taylor and Ms. McCullough an e-mail. Thank You!

Terry Fox Practice

Image
Today, we ran the whole lap of the school field to practice for the Terry Fox run. Our school will be collecting money this week to help find a cure for cancer.  Students set a running goal today based on their first attempt last week. We will revisit their goals tomorrow morning and adjust them if needed. Tonight, ask your child about their running goal. Some students will be pacing themselves better to go further. Others want to practice running more. Everyone needs to have a healthy breakfast to have the energy they need to exercise, play and learn! Room 3 will be running for a cure on Thursday at 9:30. Parents are welcome to cheer the kids on or join us in the run. If you will be joining us, stop in at the office to sign in.

School Picnic

Correction from the weekly newsletter - classroom door will open at 5:45 pm for students to give you tour!

Studying Fall/Autumn

Image
Mrs. Taylor and Ms. McCullough look forward to meeting everyone at the school picnic tomorrow evening!   With the first day of fall happening on Saturday, September 22, we have begun our study of this season.  Over the year, we will be exploring all 4 season, fall, winter, spring and summer.   Today, we read "The Reasons for the Seasons" and looked at the Earth's position to the sun during each of the seasons.  We talked about the changes we were noticing as we go into fall such as less daylight, leaves changing colours and falling to the ground, temperature getting colder and changes in the clothes we wear. We talked about the celebrations in fall such as Thanksgiving and Halloween. If your child celebrates any other celebrations in fall time, Ms. McCullough would love to know so please send me an email or let me know at the school picnic! We looked at some fall leaves and sorted them by colours.  Then we looked closely at the shapes of leaves and at a...

Beakerhead

Today, we had an incredible presentation by Paul Isaak, also known as the Funny Juggler.  His amazing presentation taught kids about the science and math behind the everyday things they do such as kicking a soccer ball, throwing a ball, dancing or juggling.  Paul is apart of Beakerhead which is a travelling performance using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to amaze people around the country.  There are event happening in Calgary this weekend and children under 14 are free.  Many students expressed an interest so I am including the link to the information if your family would like to check it out! https://beakerhead.com/events/detail?slug=beakernight-2018&gclid=CjwKCAjw54fdBRBbEiwAW28S9lAA8R82bgT9ojt9_ghp_6kMrNSg6bPHfJW_1Sw9jpK1AdmDXlmlmBoCFG0QAvD_BwE

Mixing Colours and Finding Colours in Nature

Image
Mixing Colours Today we learned about primary and secondary colours. We began with the primary colour paints (red, yellow and blue) and took turns mixing them together to create the  secondary colours (orange, green and purple). Finding Colours in Nature As we continue to explore colours, last week we looked at colours that are manufactured such as in a factory.  Today, we looked at natural colours found in nature. We went on a scavenger hunt around the school trying to find as many colours as we  could. Here are just a few of the beautiful pictures students took to show the natural colours around us.
