Room 3 - 2018 - 2019

What a fun day meeting our pen pals! We braved that rain (thank you parents for dressing your children so well for it!) We had a great time visiting with our pen pals, sketching our pen pal, using a Venn diagram to compare and contrast ourselves and  a little time to play! We then venture back to class and warmed up with some tea! I hope students enjoyed themselves! Huge thank you to our amazing parent volunteer for making  our trip such a success!

Students are coming home with a labelling of caterpillars and butterfly body parts.  Students should be able to explain how the body parts help in their lives. They are also bringing hone some sheets we did while experimenting  In our “Exploring Liquids” student. 

The kids started an art project today. We will finish next week!

                                      The Me to We Club students are organizing an Outdoor Fair for Tuesday June 18 th   rain or shine. The objective of this fair is to raise money for the pillar we are supporting this year: Clean Water/Sanitation in developing countries. The Me to We Club students have organized some very fun games and activities. The Fair Day will be run a little different than in past years.  Instead of paying for each game, we are asking students to bring  a cash donation  to participate. Each class will get a chance to visit the fair. This will be the last Me to We fundraiser for the year. Thank you, Me to We Club

Our caterpillars are now in a chrysalis. It's been amazing to watch! We've been learning so much! Our butterflies should emerge Friday or over the weekend.  Students have been putting some fruit in their enclosure to feed the butterflies when they emerge. We are all very excited for the metamorphosis!

We had so much fun today using our bug  research to create a story! We read "Diary of a Worm" and "Diary of a Spider". These stories were creative but also full of facts. Our stories will include many of the facts from our research but also be creative as diary entries in a day in the life of our bug.

We are practicing 'counting back' by racing to zero. Mrs. Taylor is catching up to the kids!!

Grade 1 and 2 students will be having a Music Sharing Class on  Wednesday, June 12 th   during their music class time. During Music Sharing Classes, students have the opportunity to share something music-related with their peers. For example, if your child takes piano lessons, they could share a piano song they have been practicing. Other ideas include: singing a song they are familiar with Dancing  Bringing a picture of a musical instrument and talking about it All students are welcome to share, but it is not mandatory. If your child is performing, please help them remember to bring what they need on that day (instrument, music, etc) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Nair at  canair@cbe.ab.ca

Hopefully students are coming home excited  to tell you about our field trip today! We had beautiful weather! Thank you to our amazing volunteers for making this  such a success and wonderful experience. We did a scavenger hunt, loose parts creating our own insects,  insect games and field study exploring  a variety of bugs! Oh and many of the students' favourite part - the playground.  :) Sorry pictures would not load to the blog but I have many that I will have for the end of the year i-movie!

We have new visitors to our classroom - 12 caterpillars! We are so excited to watch them grow each day! We will observe them through their life cycle  and release them as butterflies to our  Discovery Garden. We will use measurement and estimation! I made the mistake of telling students that I had purchased  a set of my own caterpillars for at home with Kendelle and many students wanted information on how to purchase their own (sorry parents!) You can purchase your own through Scholars Choice (an educational store in the Calgary) or  online through Butterflies Wings and Wishes.

Dear Families, We are excited that CJP will be participating on   Bike   to   School   Day on Tuesday June 4th. Students are invited   to   participate by biking from home   to  school   or driving closer   to   school   and biking the rest of the distance.   Bike   to   School   Day helps students become active and engaged with the outdoors. CJP has participated in this project for a few years, to encourage students   to   build a healthy lifestyle while having fun! We are studying insects, crustaceans and arachnids. Students have chosen their own invertebrate to research. Please talk to your child about what they are researching. We have taken some books out from the school library but they may want to go to the public library. You can also assist in finding reputable research online  and highlighting important information for them. We will be looking at National Geographic Kids  next week as an online resource. Students used library time to pick a book to use for their insect research. They enjoyed writing facts on sticky notes. There was lots of excitement and sharing of fun facts!

Last week, we got to enjoy a nice afternoon sketching the signs of spring.  We saw flowers blooming, leaves budding, ants crawling, birds singing and many more.

We had a busy morning! First, we worked on a math word problem. Students worked independently to show their thinking in a picture, numbers and words.  Then we 'traveled' to Meteghan and went lobster fishing. Everyone caught a lobster but some kids felt bad about trapping their cute and adorable lobster. Next, we went to a Mi-maq Powwow with singing, dancing and drumming!

This week has been filled with arts. Many thanks to parents and students for their participation in Music Monday. I can still remember songs I learned in elementary school so I'm confident these songs will live in the hearts of the kids for many years. A special thank you to Darcy Turning Rope from Siksika Nation for visiting our class on Music Monday and sharing his stories and song with us! In our study of Acadian culture, we have learned: Acadian's came from France and speak French. When Acadians arrives they met people from the Mi'kmaq Nation and began trading with them. We looked at some traditional Mi'kmaq designs that were made from porcupine quills. Then we tried to make our own using small wooden sticks to represent the quills. Finally, I was so happy to do an encore performance of the Gingerbread Man so that all the students could see the hard work and creativity of their peers.

Today we read the story book, "Pond Circle".   It helped us looked at food chains. Energy is passed through this food chain. We looked at Ecological Pyramid and the different levels of consumers. As you move up the pyramid, the number of these animals become smaller and smaller. We learned about decomposers. They clean up our messes by eating rotting food, poop and dead animals. In the afternoon, we explored insects from Alberta. We saw a few insects in our Discovery Garden and sketched them. We classified them as insect, arachnid, myriapod  or crustacean. Though we didn't expect to see any crustacean in our green garden :)

Today started with some fun 'Rise and Shine' activities where students played together and enjoyed chatting, giggling and playing together!

WE   W alk  For   W at e r   Hello everyone! ME to WE  is  hosting the fundraiser; We Walk For Water on May 10th. This campaign is about raising money for those communities without fresh and clean water sources.  Some people  have to  walk miles to be able to get to a water source and some of these sources are contaminated. This causes many young children, majority of them being young girls, to be unable to attend school and get a proper education. We are asking everyone at CJP to bring a loonie or a toonie for donations for the We Walk for Water campaign. Just $25 will allow one individual to be able to access clean water for life. Everyone deserves access to clean water, but not everyone can afford it.        The Water Walk will take place on  Friday May 10 th  on the outside field rain or shine.   Instead of using actual jugs of water or pebbles, students will bring their backpacks outsi...

Hello Families, Thank-you for being patient and flexible with our Music Monday dates and times. We have made a decision. Due to the weather, we will have 2 Music Monday concerts on Monday, May 6 th inside the gym. Half of the school will perform in the morning and half will perform in the afternoon. Our morning concert will start at 10:00am and the afternoon concert will start at 1:45pm. Choir, handbells, and other small ensembles will perform at both concerts. Please bring blankets, so that you can sit comfortably! Our class will be performing on Monday MORNING . We hope you can join us!
