Very Important Safety Lesson

Image
Constable Rich talked to Room 2 and 3 about being safe in our community. He had a lot of very good ideas for safety after school, getting off the bus or just walking in our community. It is important that families talk to their children and have a small list of the safe adults who can pick the child up. If you want to add a code word, that can add an extra level of safety. If someone your child is familiar with comes, your child can ask for the code word. Whether your child is meeting you after school, walking home, or getting off a bus, you need to have a meeting spot. If you are not there, it is very important that you have discussed what to do. Children can ask a safe adult (like a parent with kids) to call you. It is important that they know your number well enough that they can recall it even when a bit worried or upset. Walking in the community Cross at crosswalks, lights or corners. Look both ways and lock eyes with the driver so you know they see you. Keep looking ...

Thursday April 18

Image
Each Thursday is library day! Kids exchanged their books and read to a friend. It was so great to hear so many wonderful conversations all stemming from the books they chose! We prepared ourselves for the next Canadian community that we will learn about in Social Studies, Nova Scotia. We used Google Earth to see where the Capital City, Halifax, is located. Based on it's location, students made predications of what they might see there. We watched this video about Nova Scotia and wrote about what we would like to do if we went there. Nova Scotia

Bug Hunt

Image
As we begin our study of small flying and crawling animals, we went on a bug hunt in the classroom! We looked at variety of bugs and  began to learn about classification with vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates have a backbone while invertebrates are animals without a backbone. Our exploration today and as we continue with our study, will be on invertebrates. We also did some sketching of these invertebrates. Tomorrow, we will use peer assessment to make our sketches even better!

Boats and Buoyancy with Ms. Hoogers

Monday April 15, 2019 Dear Grade 1/2 Parents and Guardians: The grade 1/2 classes have been learning about boats and buoyancy in the Learning Commons! We have classified and ordered materials based on their buoyancy, tested floating materials and sinking materials and introduced the term, “density.” Our students are now ready to apply their understanding of buoyancy, waterproofing, and parts of a watercraft to design their very own. In the Learning Commons over the next few weeks, students will be given an opportunity to design and build a watercraft and modify it to increase stability and carry a load. Your child will be building their boat at school but they have been asked to gather materials at home. Please support your child in finding recyclable/household supplies that they can bring to school on Wednesday. Possible material ideas include: craft supplies, household items (tools, kitchen items, etc.) tin foil, wax paper, wood pieces, styrofoam trays. When selectin...

Subtraction Strategies

Image
Today, we started our subtractions strategies. They are the reverse of the addition strategies we learned! We learned some easy ones, minus zero and a number minus itself. We use our rulers and number line to help us  count back -1,-2,-3,-4. We also learned that if we know our 10 partners for addition, then we can think about that for taking away from 10. If we know 8 + 2 = 10 then we know 10 - 8 = 2.

Sound Kreations Celebration of Learing

On April 24th, we will be having a celebration of Learning for our residency, Sound Kreations. For costumes, students are asked to wear colourful bandana, personal choice. White shirts, dark pants.  It will be an 80s inspiration! The dance is looking awesome! We hope everyone will be able to attend to check out our sweet moves!

Pump Up The Jam!

Friday

Image
Today we read 'Franklin Is Messy' and then we worked on organizing our pencil crayon bins. Students worked very well together. The bins are organized and ready for learning. Coco will be visiting just two more families! Student of the Week is coming to an end next week. A big thank you to all families for supporting your child with their posters, coming to the classroom and answering embarrassing questions like: 'how old are you'. Many Thanks!

Quest Theatre

Wednesday, we had a performance by Quest Theatre "As long as the Sun Shines" We learned about the different group of  First Nations people from around Calgary and even a song to help us learn and remember. Students were very engaged learning about  the history of Canada and  the effects of settlers coming  to Canada on the land and the First Nations people. Many students asked very thoughtful questions. We ended with all the kindergarten to grade 3's  holding hands in 3 large circles and  participating in a friendship dance.

Our Learning Today

Image
Today we watched two videos on what is was like to have Autism and Epilepsy for our upcoming Autism and Epilepsy Awareness Days both happening this Thursday. We had some great discussions on how we are similar to children with Autism or Epilepsy, how we show understanding and how everyone can show support.  Your child may want to wear blue to bring awareness to Autism or purple to bring awareness to Epilepsy on Thursday.  Here are the two links if you would like to view them or further discuss them with your child. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fy7gUIp8Ms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9SPxikmf9E In Science today, we learned how the Earth is made up of 3/4 or 75% water and that our bodies are made up of 2/3 of water or 66%.  We talked about how many things and all living things are made up of water.  We looked at this with an orange.  We juiced it to see how much liquid we were able to get out of a half orange.  Of course, we also got to enjoy t...
