Subtraction Strategies

Today, we started our subtractions strategies.
They are the reverse of the addition strategies we learned!

We learned some easy ones, minus zero and a number minus itself.
We use our rulers and number line to help us
 count back -1,-2,-3,-4.
We also learned that if we know our 10 partners for addition,
then we can think about that for taking away from 10.
If we know 8 + 2 = 10 then we know 10 - 8 = 2.

Oobleck and Slime - Liquid or Solid???

Today was such exciting afternoon! After a previous discussion on the characteristics of  solids, liquids and gases, some students were wanting to know if slime would be a solid  or a liquid. We decided we wanted to explore this further. One student was so helpful in bringing in 3 containers of slime for us to explore! Thank you to this student! Ms. McCullough decided to add in Oobleck to the experiment as well. We described both the solid and liquid characteristics of slime and oobleck then wrote a conclusion on whether it should be classified as a solid, liquid or both and explain why. Students are coming home with a labelling of caterpillars and butterfly body parts.  Students should be able to explain how the body parts help in their lives. They are also bringing hone some sheets we did while experimenting  In our “Exploring Liquids” student.
