Today, we began our day with our Rise and Shine activities. 
Here are a few of the exciting work students did together.


We go to meet our new buddies today who are across the hall in grade 3.
Many students said this time getting to know their buddy and read with their 
buddy was their favorite part of the day!



We also read the story "Each Kindness" about a little girl who was not so kind to 
a classmate, Maya.  After a lesson on kindness from her teacher, she feels 
terrible for her actions.  Unfortunately, Maya has moved away.
The little girl is very upset by her missed opportunity to apologize and make
things right.  
Students were saddened by the story both for Maya and for the little
girl.  We talked about the importance of an apology even if you didn't intentionally mean to hurt someone.
We now have apology letters at our Peace Table for students to
write messages to anyone they may have upset or hurt.
We will be doing more work with this story around acts of kindess
and the ripple effect it can have.

Quest Theatre

Wednesday, we had a performance by Quest Theatre "As long as the Sun Shines" We learned about the different group of  First Nations people from around Calgary and even a song to help us learn and remember. Students were very engaged learning about  the history of Canada and  the effects of settlers coming  to Canada on the land and the First Nations people. Many students asked very thoughtful questions. We ended with all the kindergarten to grade 3's  holding hands in 3 large circles and  participating in a friendship dance.

Bug Story

We had so much fun today using our bug  research to create a story! We read "Diary of a Worm" and "Diary of a Spider". These stories were creative but also full of facts. Our stories will include many of the facts from our research but also be creative as diary entries in a day in the life of our bug.

Oobleck and Slime - Liquid or Solid???

Today was such exciting afternoon! After a previous discussion on the characteristics of  solids, liquids and gases, some students were wanting to know if slime would be a solid  or a liquid. We decided we wanted to explore this further. One student was so helpful in bringing in 3 containers of slime for us to explore! Thank you to this student! Ms. McCullough decided to add in Oobleck to the experiment as well. We described both the solid and liquid characteristics of slime and oobleck then wrote a conclusion on whether it should be classified as a solid, liquid or both and explain why. Through some research online, Ms. McCullough found out this information online: What Is Oobleck? Oobleck isn’t a liquid or a solid, it’s a "non-Newtonian fluid".
